Norwegian Gem firework display over Dover Harbour

The house is very quiet, Evan is at my mums and Rio and Bryn are at my sisters. We took advantage of a night off and went for a chinese, Champion restaraunt, as always the food and service was great. After our meal we took a walk down to the seafront as there was a fireworks display, stalls and entertainment to mark the inauguration of the Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Gem. Ruby Wax launched the display, which was quite good. The promenade was packed full of hundreds of people enjoying the evenings entertainment, it was nice to see the seafront so busy.

We decided to go for a couple of drinks after, we walked to the Funky Monkey as Les has’nt been in there. We got to the door and the ‘doorman’ told us we couldnt come in…Les was wearing a hoodie!

Child Box

To best explain this blog / story I’m going to show the email conversion between my wife Tamzin and a lady called Lisa Day from last year.

Hi,

I was wondering if you could possibly help? Me and my mum do the shoebox appeal each year for the ‘Love in a box’ christmas appeal which is done by the Mustard Seed Relief Missions charity (UK registered charity 1040805).
It gives orphanages and children in Romania, Bosnia, Croatia, and all around the world, each christmas some presents otherwise they get nothing at all and that means a very sad christmas indeed (some of them don’t even have electricity).
It’s to aid and send hope to children desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes. We make the boxes all pretty wrap them, pack them and then take them to the drop off point. I would gladly send you photo’s of the boxes when they are finished. I was wondering if you would be kind enough to have anything to spare that i could add to the boxes?

They are asking for any baby/childrens clothes, shoes, socks, toys or baby items.  It would be  greatly appreciated no matter how small.

Kind reguards
Lisa day

Hi Lisa,Thank you for your e-mail, I would certainly like to help with this appeal, though we do get allot of e-mails like yours so it would be great if you could send me further information about the scheme, either by e-mail or post. We are a small family run buisiness and the clothing site is very new so I dont think I would have anything to help you there, but we do have a baby gift site so maybe I can help with soft toys ect.I look forward to hearing from you.Kind regards,
Tamzin Sharma

Hi Tamzin,We do 20 shoeboxes which go to children who otherwise wouldn’t get anything at christmas ,The ages range from 2 - 15 years we also do one large box of baby items which are sent to the orphanage. We have to do them by the 14th november so as they can go in time for the children to get them for christmas.if theres anything else you would like to know please feel free to ask. Many thanks for your help.
Lisa

Hi Lisa,I will sort out some teddies and I also have some fleece blankets too, can you give me your address for posting. I will put together the parcel during today for posting tomorrow.I’ll wait to hear from you,
Tamzin.

Hi Tamzin,I thought u might just like to see the boxes altogether as they have been finished and packed and have now gone. The shoeboxes are being handed out to the children and  The larger boxes at the back are going to the Orphanage. We would just like to thank you once again for your very kind help,You sent such lovely items that they really will appreciate them .
could u please let me know that u received the photo safely.
Best wishes and a very Merry Christmas!
Lisa

Living conditions…

Lisa and her mum are collecting again this year, because nothing has changed, same children, same story…
I’m not going to get political here, but this makes me sad, Christmas is the UK is a big waste of money, buying toys for our children (including me) that have 100’s of toys already. Spending 100’s in Tesco, Adsa’s on food… Shopping in Boots, Woolworths and Argos on pointless rubbish that is put in to a drawer or bin somewhere and forgotten about. When all around the World children live in these poor conditions and very sad lives.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas, the food / drink and telly, seeing family and friends. I just think we need to think about others, think about our spending and maybe give a little.

Hosting Update - Dedicated server with eUKHost

I’ve moved Lessharma.com to a dedicated web server with a company called eUKHost. Had a few problems at first (my fault). But all is cool now. Hopefully the Blog and Forum will load faster on your computers!

Will be moving the baby gift sites over the next few weeks.

The first day of…

I can’t believe it it’s October already. The twins Rio and Bryn will have their 3rd birthday next month on the 26th Nov and then it’s Christmas.

Mum and Deniz came over on Sunday (yesterday) it was a nice day. As normal I couldn’t walk past my laptop without pressing the keyboard to interrupt the screen saver to reply to an email or check on the server move (that went all wrong anyway).

I also went to Evan’s school this afternoon with Tamzin to meet his teacher Miss Foster for the first time. It was a short meeting to find out about how is was getting on. All she could say was how lovely is was, very helpful, mixing well and his smile lights up the class. Tamzin and I are very proud of him, he’s doing really well at (big) school.
He comes home with 2 or 3 stickers every day on his jumper saying ‘Brilliant’, ’Helpful’ and so on..

Memset to Blue Host

Yesterday I moved lessharma.com to a web hosting company in the US (sorry for any downtime caused). The reason is that I have an excellent VPS (virtual private server) with a great UK host called Memset, all our ecommerce sites run off our VPS. But lately the server load and RAM usage has been high, down to our ecommerce sites becoming more and more busier and my personal site with it’s blog, forum, video and photos running.

I like the ecommerce sites running on UK data centres, because I want them in UK only searches on Google and other search engines. Plus most of our customers are in England and Eupore so UK data centres mean faster ping times for our sites.

So instead of increasing my RAM with Memset I decided to move lessharma.com to a US host. Why a US host, two reasons, lessharma.com doesn’t need a UK data centre to run on and secondly and most important you can’t beat the deals  / support on hosting in the US. It puts hosting in the UK to shame, tons of web space (300 GIGS), tons of bandwidth per month (3,000 GIGS), load of features, fast servers and great support!  All for just $6.95 per month.

So I spent allot of time yesterday reading reviews on US hosting before choosing Blue Host, good reviews on support and server speed, plus a Wordpress recommended hosting company. So far so good!

It took a bit of time today to get my PHP BB forum working again and my Wordpress blog, because after doing a Cpanel backup of lessharma.com and uploading and un-packing it onto Blue Host servers the MySQL databases didn’t come back OK. So I had to copy over the forum / blog databases and import them onto my new hosting account. Anyway all working fine now.

Falbum plugin - Flickr

I managed to get the Falbum plugin for my Wordpress blog working tonight. It’s looking great showing all my Flickr photos on the blog. Now all I need to do is upload more photos to my Flickr account. Hope you enjoy the photos!

My Flickr photos on my blog can be found here.

Sandwich and Canterbury

Had a great family day with the boys and Tamzin today which is really nice at the moment as the business is busy and taking up loads of our time over the weekends.
First of all we went to the Sandwich Bootfair (yes there is a place called Sandwich in Kent) and bought some children books and old cars for the boys to play with.
Then headed over to Canterbury (Kent) to Tamzin’s mum to drop off her birthday card and presents (birthday tomorrow, Monday).
Spent the afternoon in her back garden chilling, chatting and relaxing!
Tamzin’s mum has recently been to a place in France called ‘Le Touquet’ which is only an hour drive from Calais. She says it’s lovely, so Tamzin and I spent most of tonight searching on the internet at prices for hotels and campsites for maybe a quick break one weekend in the near future. Then suddenly we remembered and panicked that….

A lady from a shoe shop in Deal, Kent is coming around to view our Snuggle Feet baby shoes in the morning to maybe place a trade order from us. So we spent most of the night setting up the shoes for viewing in the morning.

Alpha Dog

Freya, our next door neighbours daughter had her 4th birthday party today. Tamzin and I with the boys all went to the party / BBQ. For September it was a really hot day. The boys (Evan, Rio & Bryn) had a great time playing in the garden and were completely shattered when we came home at about 6.30 PM.
When they were all in bed Tamzin went out to get a DVD from Blockbusters. She came home with 2 films ‘Alpha Dog’ and ‘Premonition’. We watched ‘Alpha Dog‘ starring Justin Timberlake, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone. Not knowing what the story was about, it shocked us! What a moving and chilling story.
I think most people watching this film will watch it because Justin Timberlake is in it, not knowing it’s a true story of the kidnap and murder of 15 year old Nick Markowitz back in 2000. I think most people watching the film will be shocked by the end. A sad story but a well made film, if you have time watch it.
Before writing this post I Googgled the film title and also Nick Markowitz, I was shocked to see how many people where moved by the film and it’s story. People have Blogs on the subject, Nick Markowitz has a MySpace site and the story of his murder has created so much interest all over the world.
So from a great birthday party to a shocking film on a hot Saturday in September. Also Tamzin felt very rough this morning from a hangover, thanks to a few glasses of wine last night!
